Harper claims that she has found the answer to the perennial question of the meaning of life.
Some say that life is meant to be enjoyed, to be made up of a little moments of happiness all strung together. Harper enjoys baking, or so she says. She will draw shapes in the flour, and have egg-throwing fights, and eat the cookie dough before it goes into the oven. Harper enjoys knitting, or so she says. She will play tug with the yarn, or get tangled up in it, or have mock sword fights with the knitting needles. Harper enjoys gardening, or so she says. She will arrange the flowerbed to spell out different words, and have lawn mower races, and pile up fallen leaves just so she can jump into them.
Some say that life is meant to be spent doing good, to be lived for others instead of for yourself. Harper donates to charity, as best as she can. She will busk in the streets to raise money, lustily singing her favorite songs off-key, garnering looks of amusement and some sympathetic coins. Harper volunteers her time, as best as she can. She will go down to the local animal shelter, to befriend the lonely dogs, but sometimes the shelter managers have to ask her to leave, for being too noisy and boisterous. Harper helps everyone she meets, as best as she can. She will help an old dog cross the street, or give cupcakes to her friends just to make them smile, but sometimes she chats too much and ticks others off.
Some say that life is meant to be about seeking wisdom, to grow in knowledge and become a better person. Harper reads books, or rather she tried doing it once. She attempted to pick up the encyclopedia, but it was too heavy and fell onto her poor little paw. Harper watches documentaries, or rather she tried doing it once. She picked a film about history, and settled into the couch with a box of popcorn, only to fall asleep about ten minutes in. Harper reads newspapers, or rather she tried doing it once. She caught sight of the crossword puzzle at the corner of the page, and decided that doing crosswords was more fun than reading dry news articles.
And what about Harper, what does she say?
All she says is that she knows what the meaning of life is. And with a wink and a wag of her tail, she goes back to baking, to busking, to gardening, to playing, to reading - and, indeed, to living.
